About
Barry Reed
Former special school headteacher and Ofsted inspector.

Good counsel, well given.
Why Redewell?
Rede, said “reed”, is an Old English word for counsel, and the River Rede runs through Redesdale in Northumberland. A well is a source you can return to. Redewell means good counsel, well given.
I have taught and led in mainstream, built a special school from nothing, held senior leadership roles in specialist provision for a decade and inspected schools for Ofsted. I bring all of that to every review.
I was the founding headteacher of a DfE commissioned special free school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and autism. I led it from concept to full capacity in 24 months, working through flooding, major building adaptations and complex admissions, and led it through its first Ofsted inspection.
Before that I was deputy headteacher of an all through specialist school for pupils with moderate, severe and profound multiple learning disabilities and autism. I led key areas of safeguarding, behaviour, attendance and quality assurance, and built reporting that helped leaders spot risk early. Earlier, I was acting principal and vice principal of a specialist further education college with a 68 bed residential service. I began my career teaching science and leading a year group in a mainstream secondary school.
I was an Ofsted inspector from 2022 to 2023, mainly in mainstream secondary schools across the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, and I was a designated safeguarding lead for over 10 years. I have written for Tes on making inclusion bases work and spoken at the PBS UK conference on positive behaviour support in mainstream schools and new provision.
I work as an independent SEND and inclusion consultant with schools and trusts across the North East and England, and with a small number of schools at a time, so the person you speak to is the person who does the review. Redewell is independent and is not connected with or endorsed by Ofsted.
